You Can't Force the Source

This week I want to share something fundamental about building a company that goes against everything the startup world tells you. It's about timing, patience, and trusting the creative process—even when external pressures are screaming at you to move faster.

Before: The Pressure to Force Progress

About two weeks ago, we had a team meeting where some honest frustrations surfaced. The kind every startup faces—that feeling that things aren't moving fast enough.

With our acceptance into the cyber accelerator, a natural sense of urgency had risen. We needed to start building. The clock was ticking. The programme was starting. We should be coding, shipping, iterating.

But here's the uncomfortable truth we were all dancing around: we didn't yet know what exactly we wanted to build.

Sure, we had plans for automating workflows. We could develop our current solutions further. But none of that felt truly innovative. It wasn't the breakthrough that would set us apart from everything already out there.

After the intense couple of months we'd just been through—events, audits, personal milestones—part of me was glad for a breather. But more importantly, I knew something that's hard to accept when deadlines loom: breakthrough ideas have their own timing.

This is the essence of "sourcing" something. It's outside of direct control when the organic trigger for momentum hits. Something will birth through you once it needs to come out. It's a matter of patience, observance, and taking action when you recognise it.

So we had to trust the process. We couldn't let external forces mess with our internal knowing. We needed to stay centred and direct the flow of energy accordingly.

The Transformational Moment

And then it happened. Exactly as it always does when you stop forcing and start trusting.

We were in our hostel in Tallinn, the morning of the first accelerator day. Around 3am, I woke with what I call a "download." Those magical hours when everything is silent and something decides it's the right moment to come through.

Years of journalling have taught me to pay attention to these moments. So I started writing down every thought that came. Risk management principles. Security expertise. Compliance challenges. Knowledge structures. It all started connecting in ways that felt inevitable, like the solution had always existed and was just waiting for the right moment to reveal itself.

By 6am I was empty and fell back asleep, just in time to catch one more sleep cycle before the intensive day ahead.

I knew this was going to be powerful. And with the high intensity of the accelerator—presentations, networking, founder meetups—I experienced the perfect storm of everything clicking into place.

The presentations showed gaps in what others were building. Conversations revealed desperate market needs. Team dynamics shifted as we all felt the vision crystallising. Every input added another piece to a puzzle that was assembling itself.

By the end of two days I was exhausted. Could barely muster energy for the final meetup. But I was satisfied knowing this was it—the breakthrough clarifying what needed to be built.

After: The Vision Reveals Itself

Over the flight home and during quiet weekend mornings, I consolidated all the insights. Turning the cascade of ideas into clear plans the team could digest.

What emerged wasn't something we could have brainstormed into existence. It was too elegant, too perfectly timed for the market moment.

We weren't building another compliance tool. We were building genuine risk intelligence—a system that reasons about security the way the best experts do. Not forcing companies through generic checklists, but understanding their specific context and needs.

The focus on helping SMEs with new regulations wasn't something we decided. It emerged. Thousands of companies suddenly needing to answer impossible questions about sophisticated threats. Current solutions taking months and costing fortunes. Our approach: days not months, affordable not astronomical, intelligent not generic.

We now had something so powerful we could never have forced it. If we'd pushed through our impatience two weeks ago, we'd have built something mediocre that we'd need to pivot from once the real insight arrived.

Winter Mode: Respecting Natural Rhythms

Having passed the fall equinox, we're moving into winter mode. The season where we retract, become more reflective, build strength for the next growth cycle in 2026.

It's important we respect these natural energies. The accelerator urgency needs channeling into thorough foundational work—the under-the-soil kind that makes spring's growth possible.

That's exactly what our plans reflect. We're not forcing rapid feature development. We're building deep architecture that will support everything that comes next.

The team gets it now. You can't force the Source. You can only create conditions for it to flow through you. The accelerator didn't create pressure—it created a container. The deadline didn't force innovation—it attracted the right insight at the perfect moment.

This is how real innovation happens. Not by pushing harder when things feel stuck, but by trusting the process, staying observant, and being ready to catch the download when it arrives.

The Beautiful Mirror

What struck me most powerfully while writing this entry is how the technology we're building mirrors this philosophy exactly.

We're creating systems that don't force compliance but understand context. Tools that don't push generic best practices but reason about specific situations. Intelligence that emerges from understanding relationships, not from following rigid rules.

Just as we couldn't force our breakthrough, our technology doesn't force organisations through checkbox exercises. It observes, understands, and lets the right approach emerge based on their unique situation.

The system reasons the way experts do—patient observation leading to sudden clarity about what really matters. It's building technology that mirrors how creativity actually works: watching, waiting, then moving with precision when the moment is right.

This philosophical alignment between how we build and what we build feels like the deepest validation possible. We're not just creating products. We're encoding a way of thinking into technology.

And that's why I know, deep in my bones, that what we're building will succeed. Not because we forced it, but because we let it emerge exactly when it needed to.
